FAQ

What is Tempeh?

Tempeh is a nutrient-dense, wholefood and plant-based protein source made from fermented soybeans. Originating in Indonesia, it boasts a nutty flavour, meaty texture, and is prized for its protein and gut health benefits.

How do I cook Tempeh?

Tempeh's versatility is mind-blowing! Marinate it for stir-fries, crumble it into tacos, bake it into Tempeh bacon, or pan-fry it for satisfying steaks. The possibilities are endless! Check out our recipes!

Is Tempeh healthy?

Absolutely! Tempeh is a complete protein, meaning it has all the essential amino acids your body needs. It's also high in fibre, iron, vitamins, and prebiotics, making it a fantastic addition to a healthy diet.

Does Tempeh taste like meat?

Tempeh has its own distinct, slightly nutty flavour that's not quite like meat. However, it does have a firm meaty texture. Tempeh’s ability to soak up marinades and sauces makes it a fantastic meat substitute in many dishes.

Can I freeze Tempeh?

Definitely! Freezing is a great way to extend Tempeh's shelf life. Simply wrap it tightly in cling film or store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 months. Make sure it's within the use by date on the packaging. Once defrosted, use it for 2 days. (Top Tip: we recomend you cut the tempeh into portion sizes before freezing).

What are those black spots on my Tempeh?

No need to worry! Those are just harmless spores from the starter culture used in fermentation. They're completely safe to eat, but you can scrape them off if you prefer.

Game-Changing Tempeh

I’d honestly never tried tempeh like this before – the texture and flavour are on a whole different level. It feels so much fresher and higher quality than the usual supermarket options. The fact that you get a generous 500g portion is a massive plus too – great value for how good it is.

I bought it after reading Ultra Processed People and wanting to make some better food choices, and this has definitely become a staple. Will absolutely be buying again!

one of the few high protein options that really holds its own against meat

I've had tempeh off and on, but it was always a chore, something I ate because it was a high protein vegan option for my non-meat days. But there was always some inconsistency to them, maybe a bitterness or just a strange smell or look that kept me from buying them too often. I knew fresh tempeh would be better - I mean, it's an Asian staple and we do not compromise on flavour - but couldn't source it until Club Cultured. This is so good. It's nutty and tender and definitely feels fresh. We actually look forward to eating it and it's on the table regularly. We always steam it first (this way we can cook from frozen) and marinate it directly after. From there we eat it as is, cold or pan fried. I hope this company sticks around.
